It’s baaaaaaaaaack! Not sure for how long #FLANFRIDAY will make a cameo, but for now, let us all pause and have a moment of “yay!” for this over-the-top perfect flan. No better way to bring something back than with flavors, textures and aromas that leave you just about speechless. That’s the whole point.
This came together this morning. No lie. I woke up wanting flan. It’s been forever since I’ve made one for the collective house. And the ones for clients have been delicious, but simple Nothing too fusion-y or new. I had oranges on my mind, in large part because I’ve eating extremely green for two weeks. I was begging for color. And texture. And tanginess. Orange marmalade was the perfect solution to craving.
The process began. Nothing too complicated, actually. The idea was simple: to infuse enough marmalade to taste its amazing zing. But I also wanted a bite. Ginger does that and it marries so exceptionally well with orange.
We have a winner! This combination was outstanding and just too perfect for a beautiful summer day. I used a high quality brand orange marmalade, added three heaping tablespoons to my egg mixture, and grated ginger into the mix. The raw stuff smelled good. Imagine the aroma while cooking in the pressure cooker alongside the caramel.
Orange essence is intoxicating in some kind of sexy way. I can’t explain it. It makes me feel good. Not only does it smell lovely, but it evokes irresistible summer freshness.
The only thing that could make this better, was to top it off with orange zest. A sprinkle of navel orange zest rounded out this soft egg custard, offering a perfect whiff of citrus perfume to inhale while taking a delicate bite.
