Coronavirus: Natural and Cost-Effective Prevention Methods


The continuous spread of the Coronavirus has created a lot of panic and caused a lot of food and cleaning supply shortages. Many have been left without essential items and unsure of adequate alternatives they can utilize to sustain during this time. Many of the go-to items are full of chemicals and more expensive than their natural alternatives. Below are healthier and more cost-effective alternatives you can utilize to sanitize and help improve your immune system if you’re unable to find the common household items.

Do-It-Yourself Disinfectants

If you’re unable to purchase hand sanitizers or cleaning wipes try these pocket-friendly healthier alternatives:

No Hand Sanitizer, Try This!
Mixture of 1/3 cup of Aloe Vera and 2/3 cup 70% rubbing alcohol or greater

No Disinfectant Wipes, Try This!
1 Cup of 70% Rubbing Alcohol or greater, 2 Cups of warm water and 1 tablespoon of dish detergent.

  • May substitute alcohol with tea tree oil (10 drops) or Witch Hazel
  • Other antibacterial essential oils may be added or substituted such as Eucalyptus, Lemon, Basil, Peppermint or Orange Oil

Per the CDC, for a hand sanitizer to be effective, it needs to contain at least 60% alcohol to help prevent spreading of germs.

*For alcohol concentrations greater than 70% dilute with water.

More Natural Disinfectants:

Colloidal Silver:  Known for its antiviral and antibacterial properties, colloidal silver is great for fighting against immune-related viruses when ingested internally or preventing the spreading of bacteria by spraying on surfaces or using topically.

Tea Tree Oil:  This potent antibacterial essential oil is another great natural agent. This oil is one I recommend keeping on hand to help clean surfaces and killing bacteria on the go! Tea tree oil is known for eliminating many strains of viruses, fungi and bacteria. The benefits of tea tree oil are that a small amount goes a long way and you have a better chance of finding some in your local grocery stores during this shortage.

Drinking Alcohol:  Alcohol based sanitizers must contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective.  Therefore, if you’re unable to locate rubbing alcohol, high alcohol concentrated liquors can be a great substitution.

Listerine:  Often overlooked as a great antiseptic and antibacterial solution. Listerine can be used to sanitize hard surfaces, kitchen counter tops, toilets and floors. I prefer to use the original brown Listerine for cleaning purposes. Also, you can spray Listerine into the air to rid of bugs and flies.

Immune-Boosting Supplements

No Protective Face Mask, Try This!
If you’re unable to find any protective face masks. Protect your body’s immune system from bacterial and viral infections by taking immune-boosting supplements such as:

Blackseed Oil:  Known for its antioxidant properties and multi-purposes from weight loss to asthma. Blackseed Oil is great for boosting the immune system, reducing inflammation and fighting infection. During this social-distancing period, if you have to go out into crowded public places, it will be beneficial to add black seed oil to your supplementation regimen to for viral and bacterial protection.

Vitamin C:  Known for its immune-boosting properties is another great supplement to add to your diet. Vitamin C is vital in forming healthy mucous membranes and connective tissues to help fight against bacterial and viral infections. It’s always best to consume your vitamins naturally through food but taking it in pill form will suffice in a pivotal time like this.

The most important thing is to always move cautiously, wisely and safely while we all try to figure out the magnitude of this virus. If you feel that your immune system is strong and can withstand being in a public setting. Try your best to minimize social gatherings. Stay home if possible until everything calms down and is under control.
